The Sistine Chapel rewards whoever gets there first.
Nine million people a year walk the same corridor to the same ceiling. The difference between a good morning and a bad one is entirely the hour on your ticket — early entry before the doors open, or the last slot when the coach groups have gone. Sundays the Museums are shut, except the last of the month.

Guided walks and gallery tickets exist in every European capital. Standing on the arena floor, going down into the catacombs, and eating your way through a Wednesday market do not travel.
The Arena Floor
The wooden floor is a modern partial reconstruction, and standing on it is still the moment the whole building finally makes sense: you are level with where the animals came up, looking back at fifty thousand empty seats. It is sold as an upgrade on a standard Colosseum ticket, numbers are capped per slot, and the guides who do it well spend as long on the machinery below as on the fighting above.

The Catacombs
Beneath the Appian Way run tunnels cut on four and five levels, dug when Christians could not bury their dead inside the walls. San Callisto and San Sebastiano are the ones most tours use; the Capuchin crypt near Piazza Barberini is a different thing altogether, four rooms arranged from the bones of four thousand friars. All of them are cool, quiet and completely indifferent to August.

The Roman Kitchen

When Rome hits 35°C, go under it or go after it.
There is no shade in the Forum and none in St Peter’s Square. Romans deal with a Roman summer by moving indoors at midday and coming out again at seven, and the city is set up for exactly that: catacombs and crypts sit at a steady sixteen degrees, the galleries are cool and ticketed, and the best walking tours now start after the sun drops. The street fountains are drinkable — fill the bottle.

Carbonara, cacio e pepe, gricia, amatriciana — the same handful of ingredients arranged four ways, and everyone has an opinion about all of them.
